When a drain clogs or slows to a crawl, two professional methods can clear it: traditional cable snaking (also called rodding or augering) and hydro jetting. Both work, but they're suited to different situations. Here's how they compare so you know what your Miami home actually needs.
What Is Drain Snaking?
A drain snake is a flexible metal cable fed down the pipe with a rotating head that breaks up or hooks the clog. It's fast, affordable, and effective for a single, localized blockage like a hair clog in a bathroom drain or a simple kitchen backup. Snaking punches a hole through the clog to restore flow.
What Is Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting uses a high-pressure hose with a specialized nozzle to blast water through the pipe at very high pressure. Instead of just poking through a clog, it scours the entire inside wall of the pipe, removing grease, soap scum, mineral scale, and even tree roots. It cleans the pipe rather than just clearing the immediate blockage.
Key Differences
- Thoroughness: Snaking clears the immediate clog; hydro jetting cleans the whole pipe wall, so clogs are less likely to come back soon.
- Best for: Snaking is ideal for a single, simple clog. Hydro jetting is better for recurring clogs, grease buildup, and older sewer lines with heavy scale or roots.
- Cost: Snaking is generally the lower-cost option upfront; hydro jetting costs more but does more.
- Pipe condition: Because hydro jetting is powerful, older or fragile pipes should be inspected first (often with a camera) to make sure they can handle the pressure.
Which One Do You Need?
If it's a one-off clog in a single fixture, snaking is usually the quick, economical fix. If your drains clog repeatedly, drain slowly across the whole house, or you have an older sewer line prone to grease and roots, hydro jetting is the more lasting solution. When it's not obvious, a quick camera inspection tells us exactly what's going on before we choose a method.
